What is a box spread?

A box spread is a combination of four option contracts—two calls, long and written, and two puts, long and written—structured to result in a known value at expiration.

1 · Synthetic short

Short call / long put at $6,000

$6,000 Index at expiration → Payoff ↑
2 · Synthetic long

Long call / short put at $7,000

$7,000 Index at expiration → Payoff ↑
3 · The box spread

−$1,000 at every index level

Index at expiration → Payoff ↑

Key features

  • Defined from day one.* The financing rate and the payoff at expiration are both set at the outset.
  • 100% interest deductibility. Interest expense on a box spread consisting of non-equity options is considered a capital loss and treated as 60% long term and 40% short term.**
  • Interest expense savings. Pricing is driven by the options market and often tracks close to US treasury rates, providing greater rate certainty over the life of the loan.
  • No bank credit checks. The credit is created inside the investor’s existing custodial account.
  • Flexible terms. Box spreads can be structured for various maturities, commonly 6 months to 5 years, depending on available options expirations and your needs.
  • Stay invested. You can access liquidity while remaining invested, while minimizing the need to sell appreciated assets and realize capital gains.

*The financing rate and the payoff at expiration apply only if the box spread is held until expiration, and do not reflect the results if it is closed early.

**Be sure to consult with a tax professional before implementing any investment strategy.

Is there counterparty risk?

The cash settlement value of an S&P 500 Index option box spread at expiration is backed by the Options Clearing Corporation (OCC), which significantly reduces counterparty risk. Because of that added security, financing rates on box spreads, for example, tend to price very close to short-term US treasury rates.

Replicating a margin loan, structured differently.

A box spread loan can lock in a fixed borrowing cost and a defined repayment amount from day one, rather than using a floating interest rate like a margin loan or securities-backed line of credit.
